Easy Homemade Tortillas

Ditch the shop-bought and have the satisfaction of making your own tortillas. With just flour, salt, oil and water you can make your own pillowy soft tortillas in just 30 minutes.


Ingredients:

  • 250g plain flour

  • 2tbsp olive oil

  • 150ml hot water (not kettle boiling, but as hot from the tap that your hands can handle)

  • Pinch of salt

Method:

  • In a large bowl, add all of the ingredients and knead until you have a soft dough, roughly five mins or if you have a stand mixer, add your dough hook and on medium speed, let the mixer do the work

  • After kneading together, the dough will be sticky, therefore it is important to cover the bowl with a tea towel and let it rest for 15 minutes. This enables the flour to absorb the water

  • On a floured surface, divide your dough into equal pieces, this will vary depending on the size of tortilla you fancy and roll into a circle

  • Place a frying pan on a high heat and lightly grease with oil. I put the oil in the pan and with a piece of kitchen roll, sweep it around the pan to remove the excess

  • Lay the tortilla in the pan and cook for about 30 seconds, or until the tortilla is covered in light brown spots

  • Flip the tortilla over and cook the other side for a further 30 seconds or until light brown spots show

  • Wrap your cooked tortillas in a tea towel to keep warm and soft

If you have two of you in the kitchen, it works really well to have one rolling whilst the other is cooking. If it's just you, repeat the above steps until you've rolled and cooked all of your tortillas.


Tortillas will stay fresh for 48 hours, store them air-tight for maximum freshness.
